Rainbow Quakers

The rainbow signifies peace and the struggle for peace. It is the symbol of infinite diversity, and speaks of hope and promise, of rebirth and regeneration.

Susannah Brindle (Australia Yearly Meeting)

Rainbow Quakers support the LGBTQIA+ Quaker community and those who are questioning their gender or sexuality, and provide a forum for sharing, support and exploration of LGBTQIA+ spirituality. They are a reconvened group, an earlier group being called Friends for Gay and Lesbian Concerns and were established by minute 8 of Yearly Meeting (YM) 2023.

Rainbow Quakers meet monthly by Zoom for Meeting for worship and chit chat. Contact Val Bone at valbone@friend.quakers.nz for the link. We also meet together annually for mutual support and education and sometimes action. To go on the mail out list or for more information contact rainbow@ym.quakers.nz

Ilam Baptist

At Ilam Baptist Church we affirm our regard for the God given worth and dignity of all persons. We welcome and include in our community people of every age, race, gender, nationality, ethnicity, sexual orientation, marital status, physical or mental ability, economic status and social context.

We welcome diversity of thought within our community and do not require our members to subscribe to a specific set of beliefs or agree on all matters. We seek to journey together as a community of Christ followers, embodying our values of Belonging, Accepting, Sharing, Engaging and Serving.*

All who share these values have the right to full participation in our church through attendance, membership, service participation, receiving pastoral care and support, and any other areas of involvement in our church community. They will have equal access to roles such as volunteering in various ministries, voluntary leadership, paid leadership and community leadership in accordance with our policies.

We specifically include and affirm LGBTQIA+ people who have historically been excluded by many churches. We want them, along with everyone else, to be able to bring their authentic image-bearing selves to our community and to know, as we say when we dedicate children, that they are loved and wanted and will always have a place in God’s family.

*Our values are described more fully in our belonging document, which sets out how we seek to do community together.

We’re a well established congregation of the Presbyterian kind, with an open and liberal style of faith, using a traditional worship form in the main.  We seek to develop and express  the faith within, rather than requiring conformity to creeds and confessions of yesteryear.  Faith, we believe, should be grounded in a contemporary world view. Nevertheless, we value our historical links, and see them as something to build upon. We belong to the Reformed tradition of Christianity.
